Palm Elan AT&T New webOS Mobile?

TopTongueBarry a self-professed AT&T IT employee who posted saying that not only has testing finished for the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, but that testing will soon begin for a mystery device codenamed Elan. AT&T testing for the Elan should begin within about two weeks, scuttlebut within AT&T says that the device should have a soft keyboard be released in Europe initially, but may be made available unlocked in the US. All that points to a iPhone / Nexus One format, as does the fact that some of the accessories Shadow-360 tracked down were also compatible with the iPhone. Elan is simply another code name for the O8F-CASC / US GSM Palm Pre Plus or it's what Shadow-360 and TopTongueBarry suspect something all-new and the most exciting thing going for webOS rumors given that Sprint's mysterious C40 still hasn't shown up.

                    According to TopTongueBarry who claims to work for AT&T, his company has just finished certification tests with GSM flavors of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus ahead of a possible April 26th launch. However, the bigger news from Barry is that the big A will soon be testing a third mysterious webOS device by the name of Palm Elan, which may greet us mere mortals on May 10th (but possibly in Europe first).

WebOS 1.4 Update Coming Feb 25 ?

PreCentral’s sources confirms that the much anticipated webOS 1.4 update is coming this 25 February. That new date comes from a Verizon source, suggesting at the very least Pre Plus and Pixi Plus availability; there’s no word on when Palm Pre and Pixi handsets on Sprint will see the update. webOS 1.4 is expected to bring with it the ability to record video using the Smartphone's previously still only camera, together with paving the way for Flash 10.1 support.  However Flash 10.1 won’t actually be part of the update itself.  According to PreCentral’s sources, the update will begin distributing to users in 100,000 blocks, and can also be manually Updated.

WebOS 1.3.5.2 Update Enables Bluetooth Tethering

Recently released webOS 1.3.5.2 for Europe: the GSM Palm Pre now fully supports Bluetooth sharing of your 3G connection. full change logs have been posted, and its looks like tethering is a German-only affair. No other changes to report from the previous 1.3.5 update, setting up tethering is simplicity itself.

All you need to do is go to your Bluetooth settings card on the Pre and turn on Bluetooth, making it discoverable. Then pair your PC with the Pre, and join the newly-created Personal Area Network. Voila! You're now wirelessly connected to the cloud via your phone. Of course, it's not quite as cool as turning your Pre into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

AT&T to get WebOS based Smartphones

AT&T Mobility's CEO revealed this week his company is prepping two smartphones running Palm's latest operating system, to go along with the two models Verizon will soon launch.

Ralph de la Vega used part of his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show to make this announcement, though he didn't go into much detail.

He did not name the webOS models he was referring to, and only said they would be out "soon".

Though de la Vega chose to not name names, there are only two webOS models out now: the Palm Pre and Pixi. His statements could mean that both of these are on the way to AT&T.

However, Palm unveiled updated versions of these two smartphones for Verizon Wireless at CES this week.  The Palm Pre Plus has twice as much storage capacity as its predecessor, and Pixi Plus adds Wi-Fi to its feature list. It's possible AT&T will get these two.

Or de la Vega could be looking a little farther away, and be talking about the second generation webOS devices that Palm is expected to launch this summer. That might stretch the meaning of a release coming "soon", though.

Whatever their exact configuration turns out to be, they will be the first webOS-based phones that use the GSM standard to be released in the United States, as both Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. The versions of the Pre and Pixi available in Europe use this wireless standard, though.

Palm itself has not said anything about this revelation from AT&T, instead choosing to focus its efforts at CES on Verizon's plan to launch its first webOS models later this month.

The Palm Pre and Pixi uses Palm's webOS, the replacement for the venerable Palm OS. This is a multi-tasking operating system able to wirelessly synchronize a wide variety of data with online services like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook, as well as Microsoft Exchange.

The webOS includes an on-device app store, and a growing collection of third-party software is available.

The Pre features a sliding keyboard as well as a multi-touch-capable touchscreen. This device is also equipped with Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, and a 3.0 megapixel camera with LED flash.

The Pixi can be thought of as the successor to Palm's popular Centro series. It has a tablet shape, with a 2.6-inch, 320-by-400-pixel, capacitive touchscreen. The Pixi is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the Pre.
