HTC Desire Finally Gets Gingerbread: Android 2.3 Update by End of July

HTC-Desire

HTC’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Desire is on the edge. For those in the UK will first taste the Gingerbread flavor. HTC announced it on Facebook. So the update will start rolling out before the end of this month. A more specific time frame hasn’t been given, but hey, in three weeks tops your HTC Desire will be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread! Well, some devices. First of all, the update will probably come over-the-air, and as such might see a staggered release. HTC Desire smartphones that were purchased SIM-free and unlocked first will receive the update. Initially HTC denied update for Desire for hardware restrictions but later on announced update is in works. Finally a worth waiting update for many Desire users out there.

HTC Facebook quote:-

Hi everyone. We have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire. Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July! Thank you again for your support!

Verizon HTC Incredible Coming in by April?

htc-incredible

The Verizon HTC Incredible was latest and perhaps the slickest Android handset to date.  According to reports, the phone will have a 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD 8250 Snapdragon ARM CPU and 512 MB of DRAM, just like the Nexus One. The CPU will be underclocked to 768 MHz (watch out for an Apple patent on that one). It should be more than enough speed to run most apps, while helping to providing longer talk time than the Nexus One. The phone also has a better camera than the Nexus One -- an 8-megapixel camera with a noticeably larger lens.  The camera makes it just slightly thicker than the Nexus One, measuring in at 117.5 x 58.5 x 11.9 mm.  It is rumored to come with a 6 GB of flash memory, a microSD expansion slot, and an FM tuner.  The battery is a 1300 mAh cell. Sources say that Verizon powered this monster handset would be available by April. No details of pricing or official details yet.

HTC Desire Review

desire size

HTC Desire has a Qualcomm CPU 1GHz, 512 MB ROM and 576 RAM.  connectivity with HPSA support and Wi-Fi. Other features include a joystick-type optical trackball, a 5 megapixel camera and 3.7-inch AMOLED display. well with 135 grams of weight and dimensions of 119 x 60 x 11.9 millimeters looks sleek and sexy. Of note is the redesigned user interface HTC Sense.  The design of the HTC Desire looks pretty good. It is neatly finished at a high level. It’s not for nothing that HTC places this new model on the scale as a high-end Android smartphone. The AMOLED multi-touch screen has extensive possibilities such as zooming in on certain parts. Additionally, various sensors and meters ensure that the screen display can be automatically rotated to landscape or portrait. The speed with which the HTC Desire smartphone executes certain tasks is very good.

desire1

Heavier media Apps or navigation run smoothly, without disturbing delays. The operation of the HTC Sense is intuitive and the different functions of the Desire can easily be accessed everywhere. Simply pinch inwards on one of the home screens, and the Desire shows off all the currently running displays in an easy to poke format, meaning no more scrolling to get to the other end of your screen. Messaging on the HTC Desire is a dream - despite not having a physical keyboard, the eerily responsive typing correction on this device is so sharp we could practically shut our eyes and mash our hands into the keyboard and still type a perfect message. The Sense overlay allows you to scroll your finger along the bottom of the device in applications to open up extra elements, and is used in the contacts, music and messaging to name but a few.Desire2

Considering OS Android operating system 2.1 (Eclair), very interesting is the interface HTC Sense, already models HTC Hero, and according to the studio itself, designed to allow maximum customization possible, certainly much more than the Nexus One. Also in terms of software will be FriendStream, application can aggregate content from several different social networks, and Adobe Flash 10.1. Overall this will be one of the best smartphone in 2010. Sure, Apple iPhone got a good worthy competitor this time. Don’t what happens in the lawsuit between HTC & Apple but here HTC wins.

The HTC Desire is available from April and costs about €499 ($673 US dollars). These prices are without contract. The HTC Desire will on 1st of April in Europe.

Sprint Launching Wimax Enable Mammoth HTC SuperSonic

 htc-supersonic-android-phone-148

Sprint was willing to talk a bit about the timing for its first WiMAX-enabled smartphone, it declined to give details about the actual device. However, these may have been revealed by another source. In recent weeks, details on an HTC smartphone with WiMAX have been leaking out. It's quite possible that this model, the HTC Supersonic, will debut in the near future from Sprint.

Last fall, Mathew Oommen, Sprint's VP of device and technology development, said Google's Android OS is the best option available for creating streaming multimedia applications that can take full advantage of WiMAX's high data transfer speeds. The Supersonic will reportedly be an Android-based device with a focus on multimedia. It will supposedly have 4.3-inch touchscreen, a slim tablet shape, and 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. On top of Android OS 2.1 (or possibly version 3.0), the Supersonic will run HTC Sense, this company's alternate user interface that expands on Google's standard one. This upcoming model will reportedly have a kickstand to hold it up while the user is watching movies on the comparatively large screen.Despite all the leaks, many details on the Supersonic, such as the camera resolution or battery capacity, remain unknown.

The phone will run on the 4G WiMax network Sprint has been building with wireless Internet service provider Clearwire Corp. (Sprint owns 51% of Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire.) This 4G service is currently available in 27 U.S. markets covering more than 30 million people and will extend to Houston, Tex. in the next few weeks. By the end of the year, the network is expected to include Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington and cover up to 120 million people.Paget Alves, Sprint's president of Business Markets, says the company views 4G as a multi billion dollar business opportunity. Healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, media and retail companies are already using 4G to train and communicate with employees, he notes. Sprint says 4G technology can be up to 10 times faster than 3G, making it a good fit for bandwidth-intensive applications like streaming video, transmitting medical images and e-mailing training manuals. This universal "need for speed" means businesses and government agencies not just consumers--will likely adopt Sprint's 4G phone when it debuts, says Alves. He declined to disclose additional details about the handset, but online reports point to a touch-screen phone running Google's Android operating system, designed by Taiwan's HTC. Since Sprint's 4G network is not yet nationwide, the handset is said to be "dual-mode", automatically switching to Sprint's 3G network in areas where 4G isn't available.Sprint is counting on its new 4G phones and markets to keep it ahead of rival Verizon, which plans to introduce its own 4G network--using a different technology called LTE--later this year.

The HTC Supersonic features:

  • 4.3-inch Touchscreen
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon
  • Resolution of 480×800
  • HTC Sense UI
  • 3.5 mm Audio Jack
  • 5 MP Camera
  • Bluetooth 2.1

Google Nexus One Facing 3G Connectivity Problems

nexusone_1

Google’s Android smartphone, the Nexus One, seems to have some problems with 3G reception.

There’s a long thread over at the Google support forums, where some of the new Nexus One owners are reporting 3G connectivity issues in the US.

It looks like the HTC-made smartphone gets a weak 3G signal from time to time, and even switches to EDGE, while other T-Mobile phones have good reception.

Nexus One users to report the problems as:

“I switched from a Moto Cliq, where I had 3-4 bars of 3G in my house constantly, to a Nexus One. I now either get 1 or no bars of 3G. I made sure that always use 2G was disabled, and I can’t seem to figure out what the problem is.”

“I upgraded from a Blackberry Pearl to the Nexus One. I cannot get any 3G service as of yet. Don’t know what the problem is. T-mobile and HTC support weren’t able to help.”

“I’m having this same problem. My G1 has 3G with full strength, but sitting right next to it my Nexus has 1 bar of 3G and keeps switching to Edge. If I let it sit for a while it may go up to 3 bars of signal strength but as soon as I start trying to use it the signal strength drops back down to one bar. I called T-mobile to make sure that I didn’t need to activate the phone or something to get 3G service. They said my account looked fine and that they couldn’t give me any more support since I had a Nexus One, that I had to call HTC. So I called HTC and they said that your 3G service is a T-mobile issue and they couldn’t help me. The fact that my G1 works perfectly sitting right next to the Nexus though makes me think it really is a problem with the phone.”

So it might be a problem related just to T-Mobile’s 3G (the carrier uses the not-so-common 1700MHz frequency). No one from the UK, Singapore or Hong Kong reported any issues with Nexus One’s 3G performance. Lets hope HTC fixes all these issues.

“Combining the intuitive user interface based on HTC Sense with an outstanding set of specifications and the powerful T-Mobile network, the HTC HD2 adds up to be not only an amazing device, but an amazing experience as well,” said Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America. “The HTC HD2 is a Windows phone that has already been enthusiastically received in Europe and Asia, and we are excited to bring this highly anticipated device to the U.S., exclusively through T-Mobile USA.”

The HTC HD2 uses the first capacitive touch display on a Windows phone for the smoothest possible performance and to make viewing, zooming and resizing Web sites, Microsoft Office files, PDF documents and pictures easier with just a simple pinching motion. The large capacitive display makes it easy to read and reply to Outlook e-mails, edit a Word document or modify an Excel spreadsheet right from the HTC HD2. In addition, the HTC HD2 delivers advanced phone features including GPS functionality, a Web browser, and an advanced 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with dual LED flash for capturing images, even in dim conditions.

HTC Smart Runs Brew OS

500x_htc-smart2

HTC's laying its cards down with a phone called "Smart" for Europe and Asia, which runs on Qualcomm's BREW platform. As BREW is cheap for the manufacturer, I'm willing to bet the Smart will be cheap for the consumer too.

Running on BREW, it's has HTC's Sense interface which as you know, was last seen on the HD2. Processor speed is just 300MHz and RAM is a fairly average 256MB. Internal memory is 256MB, but that's expandable by microSD. The touchscreen QVGA is 2.8-inches, and connectivity is HSDPA internet, and Bluetooth, with no GPS or Wi-Fi mentioned. The camera is 3.0-megapixel with flash.

rogers-htc-android-645x435

HTC Magic and Dream owners in Canada take note as Rogers has reconsidered its “No Donut or Eclair policy” for at least one of its two Android handsets. Rogers has confirmed that, in the next few weeks, it will issue a minor update for the Android 1.5 OS on both the Dream and the Magic, bringing the HTC Sense UI to the Magic while keeping the platform steady at Android 1.5. By mid-2010, the HTC Magic will be updated to Android 2.1 complete with HTC’s updated Sense UI. Rogers confirmed that the HTC Dream will not be  updated past Android 1.5 due to “certain limitations on the HTC Dream.”  Sorry Dreams!

Press Release

Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6, 2010

    newsrelease

AT&T today announced plans to launch five new devices from Dell, HTC and Motorola based on the Android platform. The company also announced a major initiative to expand the universe of mobile applications beyond smartphones to more mobile phones – and spur future app development for emerging consumer electronics devices, its U-verse TV platform, and enterprise and small business workplaces.

At the 4th annual AT&T Developer Summit in Las Vegas, executives outlined details including:

    • New devices that will give customers the most robust choices of major operating systems (OS), including Android™, in the U.S.
    • A goal to offer all major smartphone OS app stores
    • An agreement with Qualcomm to standardize apps development for mid-range Quick Messaging Devices using BREW Mobile Platform. These devices are used by millions of customers who historically have not had the same convenient access as smartphone customers to the market’s hottest apps
    • A new AT&T SDK (software developer kit) to help developers immediately begin to develop apps for these devices
    • A significantly enhanced developer program and new relationships with global carriers that are intended to make it easier for developers to distribute apps in markets outside the U.S.
    • Future initiatives to enable developers to create more apps for AT&T’s U-verse TV, emerging consumer electronics devices, and businesses
    • A new AT&T Virtual Innovation Lab and two new Innovation Centers, which will help developers and spur apps development

“Applications help consumers realize the full value and benefits of mobile broadband networks, services and devices,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Today some AT&T customers can take advantage of more than 100,000 apps – but only if they have the right handset. Our goal is to bring more apps to millions more of our customers who want convenient access to the market’s hottest apps. At the same time, in the future, we plan to go well beyond mobile devices to spur apps development.”
