Rogers HTC Dream Free Upgrade

jan4_2010_htc_magic_rogers-1262751126

HTC Dream owners will agree that Rogers offer for a free upgrade to an HTC Magic is just that. Rogers brick and mortar shops won't be doing this upgrade  between the 12th and 26th of January. No added fees, administrative charges or anything,  Rogers is even eating the $79 upgrade fee and the $35 admin fee for the new set. : it is an upgrade and as such Rogers doesn't even want your old set back, so you'll have a day phone and an evening phone, one 2.1 at some point, anyway and a nice 1.5 set with Sense.

Press release

Here are the details of the HTC Dream to Magic upgrade that Rogers announced Friday:
Current Rogers customers who activated a new Rogers HTC Dream through Dec. 31, 2009 - either through upgrade or a new activation - may upgrade that device to an HTC Magic for a limited time.
Upgrades must be done through Customer Care (1-888-Rogers1) or through Rogers.com (existing 3yr data plan required for online upgrades, instructions below). This special upgrade offer does not apply at retail.
This limited-time upgrade is available between January 12 and January 26 only.
The $79 upgrade cost of the device, plus the $35 administration fee are being waived. Customers who choose to take advantage of this offer get a $599 phone for $0 with the renewal of a three-year term from the date of the upgrade (For most customers, this will represent a contract extension of seven months or less).
The upgrade is completely optional. Customers who choose to can stick with their HTC Dreams and remain in their current contracts.

HTC Magic and Dream owners in Canada take note as Rogers has reconsidered its “No Donut or Eclair policy” for at least one of its two Android handsets. Rogers has confirmed that, in the next few weeks, it will issue a minor update for the Android 1.5 OS on both the Dream and the Magic, bringing the HTC Sense UI to the Magic while keeping the platform steady at Android 1.5. By mid-2010, the HTC Magic will be updated to Android 2.1 complete with HTC’s updated Sense UI. Rogers confirmed that the HTC Dream will not be  updated past Android 1.5 due to “certain limitations on the HTC Dream.”  Sorry Dreams!

LG GW620 (aka EVE) Review

Verdict
Pros -  Android 1.5 operating system Fully Loaded
          - 4GB or 2GB internal flash memory
          - 5 MP, 2560 x 1920 pixels, autofocus, LED Flash
          - Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Full QWERTY keyboard
          - Sleek Superb Design, Visually appealing
Cons – No standalone GPS without Carrier
          -  Resistive Touch Screen
          - No Hardware Scrolling device
lg eve1
It features the Android 1.5 OS with Quad Band EDGE and Tri Band HSPA connectivity. It’s geared towards users who frequent social networking sites, as its SNS (Social Networks Services) Manager automatically pulls together Bebo, Facebook, and Twitter updates. Included also is LG’s proprietary S-class interface, a revolutionary GUI designed for managing and navigating contacts, apps, and multimedia much more quickly and easily. Additional notable features include a 5-line QWERTY keyboard, a 3” resistive touchscreen, a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, WiFi, and a plethora of built-in Google apps: Google Search, Google Maps, Google Latitude.

eve gw620
The Eve allows you to use a soft keyboard when you don’t have the hardware keyboard open. It chooses a T9 keyboard which is not a bad choice. The screen is fairly narrow and fitting any more keys would make it really hard to type. It would have been nice if it implemented Cootek’s keyboard for the Android but the LG keyboard works decently well because it’s assisted with an auto-complete/auto-correct. The auto-complete/auto-correct feature however is cumbersome to use with the slide-out keyboard because of its implementation.
LG made a few interesting design choices. For one, it forgoes the dedicated answer and end button along with a navigation pad. The only buttons in front are the back, home and menu buttons. The menu button is a physical button that you can actually press while the back and home buttons are the annoying touch sensitive buttons that ‘press’ if you accidentally brush your finger on them. The home and back buttons means something unexpected will happen  anytime you hand the Eve to someone.
The main menu has also been customized. Basically you can view all your apps from your main menu. There are different categories which you can put apps in. The idea is similar to LG’s stupid S-Class interface but it actually works on the Eve since you don’t have to scroll side to side to view each category’s app.
eve cam
The camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels. It’s capable of taking decent (for a camera phone) pictures. I did find that the camera uses relatively slow shutter speeds which makes it less useful if your subject isn’t posing. I tried taking a lot of baby pictures with the Eve and got many many blurry pictures because of this. The camera does have some nice features including ISO setting and even a manual focus!
Video recording is much less impressive as you’re limited to a maximum resolution of 320×240 . You can use the flash as a video light but it has a very limited range.
The video editor allow you to trim video add sound or subtitles or change the video’s colour. Really, who cares when the maximum resolution is only 320×240. Music playback is handled by the default android music player.
lg eve back
the Eve would sporadically freeze or not wake up giving me a Black Screen of Death. The only way to get around it was to physically remove the battery which made it frustrating to use. It can take quite a while for the Eve to boot up after you remove the battery. Also, if you’re someone who keeps their finger nails very short you’ll have a lot of trouble removing the battery. But Lg had fixed the problem with latest unit.
 lg eve android
Also there are many number of applications out there in android marketplace to be downloaded.
Despite of minor flaws LG eve is a great Mobile out there to buy.

No Android 1.6 to Rogers HTC Dream & Magic

Rogers HTC Dream & Magic with android 1.5 no to android 1.6
rogers-htc--android
If you have either a HTC Dream or Magic from Rogers Wireless, you might want to brush up on your rooting and porting skills because it appears that both devices will not receive an official OS update past Android 1.5. Said HTC’s website (and confirmed by Rogers):
Official Statement
HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience.
We’re not even going to bother getting into how upset some owners are, but we think it needs to be said how sad it is that a company would release a pair of devices, call it an open-sourced “Revolution” and then completely screw its customers over. it’s not like other carriers offering non-”with Google” Dreams and Magics weren’t able to dish out some new software upgrades.
