Nokia's website offers free updates for the device, after which you will be able to access the downloaded maps.

Steps to Fix Nokia N500 Maps Problem
- Go to the Nokia 500 Auto Navigation Software Update webpage (see Resources).
- Download. Save this file on your computer's desktop.
- Launch installer file and follow the instructions to complete the installation of the update wizard.
- Connect your Nokia navigation device to the computer with the USB data cable.
- Go to "Start" > "Programs" > "Nokia" > "Nokia 500 Auto Navigation Software Update Wizard." This will launch the onscreen instructions, which will complete the software update. Once the software updates, you will be able to access all the maps that are on the device.


Nokia 500 is priced at 9000/- INR (190$USD)  in Indian market. At the same price point competition is a bit tougher with Android Smartphones out there.  Interested in other alternatives LG Optimus One P500 or Samsung Galaxy Fit S5670 or Micromax A70 and Motorola Fire XT are viable choices.

Skype Now Available for Symbian Phones | Download | Free Calls Using Skype

Skype released a version of its online service free calls (VoIP) terminals that have the Symbian OS. The application is free and has been published in Ovi store, basically we can make free calls via Wi-Fi with other service users. Skype for Symbian can be downloaded directly from the Skype website, and can be run in any Nokia smartphone using Symbian ranging from the first generation to the latest version of the platform. Call and text people who don't have Skype at really low rates. It's especially great value if you're calling or texting people who live abroad. Simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit or talk unlimited with a subscription. When you're abroad, connect to a WiFi zone and avoid roaming charges on calls and texts. Symbian operating system goes open source | SDK Download

 

1symbian-foundation The Symbian Foundation’s announced that it would make its code open source in 2008 and has now completed the move. It means that any organisation or individual can now use and modify the platform’s underlying source code “for any purpose”. Symbian has shipped in more than 330m mobile phones, the foundation says. It believes the move will attract new developers to work on the system and help speed up the pace of improvements.“This is the largest open source migration effort ever,” Lee Williams of the Symbian Foundation told BBC News.“It will increase rate of evolution and increase the rate of innovation of the platform.”

Ian Fogg, principal analyst at Forrester research, said the move was about Symbian “transitioning from one business model to another” as well as trying to gain “momentum and mindshare” for software that had been overshadowed by the release of Apple’s iPhone and Google Android operating system.

It believes the move will attract new developers to work on the system and help speed up the pace of improvements. The Resco Photo Viewer for Symbian phones just got updated to 5.0.3 beta. The Resco Photo viewer application is by far the best photo / gallery application i have installed on my Symiban phones so download it and give it a try. Don’t forget that this is a beta release so there will be a few bugs.
