Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 series Live Marketplace | Details

Try-and-Buy-WP7S-540x305 Windows Phone 7 Series has a bold new User Interface, and a brand new mobile Operating System outlook from the Redmond-based company, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the platform will have an App Store competitor and Finally it’s done. Named as the Windows Phone Marketplace will be the successor to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

Microsoft says that it’s a smarter way to find your apps, games, and music for your phone, thanks to the panoramic view that Windows Phone 7 Series is highlighting. You can also find featured items of the day. There’s also the ability to read reviews of the applications you want, as well as “try before you buy,” which is created by the developers. They can choose how long an application can be tested, before the customer is opted to buy it. You'll be able to browse and buy apps and games through the Zune desktop client on your PC. You'll be able to uninstall purchased apps and re-download them at a later time at your leisure, the purchases are tied to your Live account, not your phone, so you can move between devices at will. That's a Microsoft policy that developers won't be able to override.

mix10 Free development tools for Windows Phone 7 Series are available as of today. These include Silverlight, the XNA Game Studio 4.0, Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone 7 Series Emulator (for app testing), and a Windows Phone 7 Series add-in (to use with Visual Studio 2010 RC). The WP7 dev tools have features that include: accelerometer support, hardware-accelerated video support, multi-touch, Microsoft Location Service and Microsoft Notification Service.

Motorola to ditches Google for Bing Search & Maps on Android Smartphones

Motorola_0bingapp Motorola’s Android smartphones sold in China will see Google search and Google Maps replaced by Bing search and Bing Maps. Devices currently in the hands of consumers or sitting unsold on store shelves will be getting an OTA update. Both Motorola and Microsoft have not announced any specific plans to expand on their partnership outside of China based on “Global alliance”. Android-based phones will have a Bing bookmark pre-loaded and an enhanced search widget with Bing integration - although customers will be able to switch to another default search engine if they choose.

"We believe that consumer choice is one of the most critical components to ensuring a rich and seamless client experience," said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services, Motorola Mobile Devices. "Motorola and Microsoft have enjoyed a longstanding collaboration and the addition of Bing services to our Android-based smartphones in China is another important step in empowering our end-users."

"Mobile devices continue to be a critical place for customers to access location-based services such as local search and mapping," said Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of the Online Services Division at Microsoft. "We are pleased to expand our long-standing relationship with Motorola to bring powerful Bing location-based services to Motorola's innovative new mobile devices, providing consumers with more choice and flexibility in mobile search."

Search and Maps capabilities through Microsoft will initially be available in China, starting in Q1 2010, through either pre-load or over-the-air updates for devices already in market.

Microsoft Demos XNA Games on Windows Phone 7

At the recent event at GDC 2010 Microsoft showed us Demo of Windows phone 7 Series live games. The two titles are The Harvest , a good looking touch-controlled dungeon crawler with destructible environments, being developed by Luma Arcade; and Battle Punks, a one-on-one sword fighting Facebook game by Gravity Bear that's being ported over. The Harvest has a fixed camera and some pre-rendered elements, but there were indeed some real polygons being crunched before our eyes at a full resolution & full screen 3D was possible. Check the screen caps below.

    harvest harvest2     harvest3

Microsoft spoke to the ease of its Direct3D development platform, which was built by the same folks responsible for the first-gen Xbox (though we're under the impression that most of the similarities end there). What we saw of The Harvest was built in "two or three weeks," mostly from scratch, and folks who've already built games for XNA in VisualStudio shouldn't have much trouble with a port from the sound of things: "very, very easy," said Microsoft.

Right now developers can do their testing in Windows, but there should be a Windows Phone 7 Series emulator out for devs eventually. it'll make it into the upcoming XNA 4.0 release scheduled for the coming month.

    battlepunks

There is no simple porting OpenGL games to the Direct3D environment, but that's not a barrier for regular suspects like Oberon, Sega, Glu, EA, Popcap, Hudson Entertainment, Namco, Konami and Microsoft Game Studios from signing on.

XNA Game Studio 4.0! This latest version provides a powerful, productive, and portable technology for game development on Windows Phone 7 Series, Xbox 360, and Windows PC.
New to XNA Game Studio 4.0

    • Hardware accelerated 3D API’s on Windows Phone 7 Series
    • Visual Studio 2010 integration with our toolset

Microsoft will release two phones that sell Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile operator. The phones are aimed at heavy users of social networking sites, but the names of the devices have not yet been announced. The devices are being developed by Microsoft under the codename Project Pink and competes primarily in the wireless industry with sales of Windows Mobile software to multiple handset manufacturers. The software giant also sells the Sidekick phone, which makes Sharp. Sidekick joined with the acquisition of Danger. Microsoft has long denied rumors that are developing new addition to the Sidekick phones, but the comments about Project Pink followed.

Both port in CDMA and GSM models, and that the Pure has a 480 x 320 display while the Turtle has a 320 x 240 screen, it’s all a bit of a mystery.  Social networking seems to be heavily integrated  along with Zune HD style media functionality. The devices are being developed by Microsoft under the codename Project Pink, "the source said. Representatives from Microsoft and Verizon Wireless would not comment. Microsoft competes primarily in the wireless industry with sales of Windows Mobile software to multiple handset manufacturers, but has been losing market share to Apple, Google and others. The software giant also sells the Sidekick phone, which makes Sharp. Sidekick joined with the acquisition of Danger. Microsoft Windows Mobile 7 Series A New Era Dawns

Cavgpture Windows Mobile has been losing market share to rivals like Apple's iPhone OS and Google's Android OS for years. The only thing that has slowed this trend has been companies like HTC covering up the standard user interface with ones they have developed themselves. The more of Microsoft's UI these alternate user interfaces left exposed, the more the users complained. That's a serious condemnation. New Windows Phone 7 emphasizes the features consumers want: social networking, pictures, games, etc.The venerable Start button is gone, along with any hints of the desktop OS. And no one wants to use a stylus anymore, so Windows Phone 7 has been redesigned to be controlled with a fingertip. The tiny buttons are gone, replaced with large ones. Fortunately, displays have grown larger, too. Just about the only significant similarity between old and new is that both include Microsoft Office Mobile and support for synchronizing with Microsoft Exchange, so smartphones running Windows Phone 7 can still be used for work, even if that's not their focus anymore.
    it_photo_89998_42
As much as I like the new user interface, I'm not anywhere near as fond of Windows Phone 7's other big change: no compatibility with current software. The wide array of third-party applications was Windows Mobile's greatest strength... I could argue it was its only strength. I'm trying to see the logic behind the decision to give this up.Developers are going to have to re-write their apps, as well as submit them for approval so they can appear in the official software store -- which will apparently be the only software store.  It's my understand that this is Microsoft's way of insuring that software conforms to the new Windows Phone look and feel. There's a part of me that can agree with this. The vast majority of current Windows Mobile apps were written to be used with a stylus and so are virtually unusable with a fingertip because all the control elements are too small. Finding a way to force developers to update the user interface on their apps makes sense. But getting to this goal requires so much sacrifice. It feels to me like Windows Phone is chewing its own foot off to escape from a trap.
    Capture  Capturse   Captureg

Microsoft encouraged companies making Windows Mobile-based phones to explore a wide range of shapes and sizes.  The choices for companies making Windows Phone devices will be much more limited, as Microsoft is going to specify some hardware requirements, most notably a WVGA, capacitive touchscreen. During his presentation on this new operating system, CEO Steve Ballmer made the argument that by limiting hardware options, Microsoft is fostering innovation.  This is completely illogical... but I still agree with Microsoft's decision. Over the years, companies made some very marginal Windows Mobile smartphones, and these left plenty of customers with a bad taste in their mouth about this operating system. The usual cause for bad performance was insufficient RAM, but slow processors were sometimes a culprit too. With Windows Phone 7, we'll be sure that any smartphone we buy is going to have good performance. Incidentally, Microsoft is also no longer going to allow its licensees to replace the default user interface with their own. They will be allowed to tweak it a bit, within certain limits, but the days of TouchFLO and TouchWiz on Windows phones are gone.
    resized_windows_phone
Despite this week's official unveiling, we're still about nine months away from the first smartphones running Windows Phone 7 hitting the market, so Microsoft has plenty of time to make some adjustments to it.In the coming months, I'm hoping that Microsoft will seriously consider adding a compatibility layer that will allow it to run current Windows Mobile apps, at least during a transition phase. Otherwise, those who buy the first models running this OS will almost certainly have a very limited selection of third-party apps to choose from. As for the other features of Windows Phone 7, I don't think they need many changes at all -- the new user interface is the best move Microsoft has made in years, and I welcome the new hardware requirements.

Microsoft Aiming at Mobile World Congress Event | Sneak Peak Windows Mobile 7

    windows_mobile_7_logo

Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach basically said as much in his January 7 Financial Analyst Briefing at CES (which I listened to via Webcast). In response to an analyst question, Bach said to expect in WM7 “things will be talked about at MWC.” (Istartedsomething blogger Long Zheng is expecting and hearing the same.)

On Thursday, Bach reiterated some of what the Redmondians have been saying for months, specifically that WM7 won’t be just a business-focused mobile OS platform any more.

“I’ve seen it and played with it,” Bach said. He said he believed Windows Mobile 7 will “set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way.”

Bach said to expect Microsoft to step up its “go to market approach” so that it will be “more engaged” with its mobile OEMs. He didn’t get more specific than that, but my take was he was talking about Microsoft tightening its development and marketing connection with its mobile-phone-maker partners.

Bach also took a couple of shots at Apple (which controls the entire end-to-end mobile platform) and Google (for providing conflicting signals to its Android ecosystem by offering its own “Google phone”). I keep wavering as to whether or not Microsoft might actually release its own Microsoft phone, but if it does at this point, Bach would be the pot calling the kettle black. So maybe any kind of Microsoft-branded Pink phones are off the drawing board, after all.

I’m betting Microsoft is going to show off more than just the Windows Mobile platform in Barcelona, based on what the company did last year at the MWC show. I’m thinking the Softies might also be ready to talk about the next version of its My Phone service, which stores Windows Mobile phone data to the cloud.

Bach said to expect in WM7 “things will be talked about at MWC.” and regarding the consumer-focussed OS he said: “I’ve seen it and played with it,” (Windows Mobile 7 will) “set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way.”

Bach further said Microsoft intends to step up its “go to market approach” so that it will be “more engaged” with its mobile OEMs. We know Microsoft has spoken a lot about speeding up the release cycle of both its OS’s and actual devices, reducing it from a common 2 years to as short as 6 months.

Mary Jo Foley, who reported on the discussion, believes Mobile World Congress will also see Microsoft announcing improvements to its My Phone service, which should integrate even more deeply with Windows Mobile phones, for example allowing ring tones to be changed directly from the web interface, applications and themes to be installed, and better integration with Windows Live and Live Mesh.Mobile World Congress (MWC) is between the 15th and 18th of February 2010 and will be held as usual in Barcelona.

Google Phone Plan Very Difficult to Pull Off Says Microsoft

    DD138AA9E88492259A1704BD5CD2C

Microsoft Corp.’s Robbie Bach, head of the division that makes mobile-phone programs, said Google Inc. will have a hard time attracting partners to its wireless software after introducing its own handset.
Google started selling the Nexus One phone this week. The company also provides its Android operating system to other handset makers, rivaling Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. Because Google now sells its own phone, handset makers may worry the company will prioritize its own product over theirs, Bach said. That could push some to stop using Google’s software, he said.
“Doing both in the way they are trying to do both is actually very, very difficult,” he said in an interview yesterday from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. “Google’s announcement sends a signal where they’re going to place their commitment. That will create some opportunities for us and we’ll pursue them.”
Google’s wireless efforts escalate the company’s competition with Microsoft, a rivalry that spans Web search, browsers and business applications such as word processing and spreadsheets. The Android program is adding users faster than Windows Mobile, according to research firm iSuppli Corp.
The Nexus One is manufactured by Taiwan’s HTC Corp., which designed the device with Google. Google opened an online store for the Nexus One and also plans to offer other Android devices through the site. The company’s aim is to efficiently connect Google’s online customers with Android devices, said Katie Watson, a spokeswoman for the company.
“We want to make the overall user experience simple,” she said in an e-mail. “Our hope is to change the way consumers purchase a mobile phone.”
    Trailing IPhone, BlackBerry
“No one has ever succeeded in selling their own device while trying to license to partners simultaneously,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Los Angeles-based research firm Interpret LLC. “As much as Google can say it’s not a Google phone, the phone says Google on it. They’re going to have to convince their licensees they’re not in competition with them.”
Microsoft’s Windows Mobile hasn’t kept pace with the growth in sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, Android phones and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry, according to El Segundo, California- based iSuppli. Windows Mobile 6.5 went on sale last year to critical reviews.
In October, ISuppli forecast that Microsoft would lose its No. 2 spot in the smartphone market to RIM.
Microsoft remains focused on working with phone makers and carriers, Bach said. The Redmond, Washington-based company does pitch in on engineering work when partners are developing phones, he said.
“Over time you have to decide whether your approach is with the partners or more like an Apple approach that is more about Apple,” he said. “Google’s is an interesting step. We’ll see how people react.”
    Motorola Phones
Microsoft fell 47 cents to $30.30 at 2:12 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Google, based in Mountain View, California, declined $12.42 to $595.84.
Motorola Inc., the largest U.S. phone maker, showed a new Android model at the Consumer Electronics Show yesterday, after introducing its first two phones running the software last year.
Mobile carriers may be concerned that Google requires Nexus One users to sign up for a contract through Google, allowing Google to control the customer relationship, Gartenberg said.
Microsoft, whose Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer spoke at the show last night, isn’t making many phone-related announcements at the event. Instead, the company plans to provide an update to its “future direction” at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month, Bach said

Microsoft to Launch Dual Screen E-Book Reader

    11157

Leaked reports says Microsoft has been working on an innovative concept for tablet PCs. The Courier project will supposedly create devices that have two screens, and are capable of folding like a book.

The first of these may be announced this evening by Steve Ballmer during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Published reports indicate that Microsoft's CEO will unveil a tablet device that will be made by HP. No additional details were given, and it's not yet known if this product is related to the Courier project.

This device is supposedly going to be released around the middle of this year.

    Project Courier
This fall, a great deal of information leaked out of Microsoft about a secret development project. Under the name Courier, this will allegedly create a new class of tablet computers.

Not all the details are known yet, but a rough overview has come out.

The Courier's 7-inch dual screens will support multi-touch, and will be used for controlling the device, entering text, and drawing.

When closed, it will be protected by a leather cover, and will include a rear-facing camera.

Verizon makes a Deal with Microsoft Bing ditching Google

    View bng

According to the Register, Microsoft has paid Verizon Wireless $500 million in a five-year search deal to make Bing its official search engine on most smart phones, like the BlackBerry Storm II.

Some Verizon users have grumbled. Some bloggers have called the move “evil.” There are even (completely off-base) whispers of payola. And yeah, sure, Verizon’s not easy to love in the best of times and even less when it seems to be stripping users of the very choice and openness that getting a smartphone represents.

Those more charitably disposed might want to remind us, before the keening and the wailing really starts up, that the change is only applicable to the Verizon embedded browser. Users can still navigate to a different browser via Bing or download a Yahoo! or Google widget to circumnavigate the native default. And I have to say it’s funny how no one complains when the Googlopoly is extended with every new smartphone/embedded Google apps launch. The Droid army is coming, let’s not forget.

All of that aside, I wanted to take the opportunity to take us back to a nastier, more brutish time. Remember when mobile search was a really big deal and Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! and others saw snagging a carrier exclusive in this burgeoning market as the ticket to winning the overall search wars? When Yahoo! was actually considered a real threat, with an 18 percent market share in mobile ... then it won an AT&T exclusive but its up.

Not that long ago, but that was before the floodgates opened on the smart phone revolution, before open mobile access to the Internet was common. When the typical mobile Web interface was shudder a WAP portal.even though Bing is getting press out of the deal and more exposure, what kind of effect this will have in moving the search dial. Part of me wants to say “none,” because the Googlewebs has taken over smartphone search like kudzu in Georgia – but Verizon has a pretty hefty BlackBerry user base, after all. And one would really need to be a Google or Yahoo! devotee to bother taking measures to avoid Bing as the default. But, that whole doubling of early-termination fees thing, combined with the lack of openness on its network, along with this seeming throwback to carrier overlord-like control, has given Verizon a kind of bogeyman persona among consumers of late.
