Google Sharing Revenue to Increase Android Market?

Google is sharing advertising revenues with carriers that use Android, according to multiple sources. Sources Say, Google is also cutting deals with the handset makers. The revenue-sharing agreements only occur when the handsets come with Google applications, like search, maps and Gmail, since that is not a requirement of Android. Google declined to comment, and said terms of its agreements with partners are confidential. A number of carrier and handset makers also declined to comment.

Some handset makers may be forced to do similar deals, but for those who aren’t in the advertising business, it could be trouble. On the flip-side, this is good news for carriers, which have been looking for new revenue sources that could help pay for the next generation of networks that will cost billions. And google is out there.

Advertisements in applications like gmail and maps are nearly non-existent, with the vast majority being displayed in search results. However, by many estimates the mobile advertising is set to take off. Google has agreed to pay $750 million for the mobile ad network AdMob. Google has been clear from the start that it planned to give away the operating system and make money on advertising, but new twist is to share in those money.

Samsung announced the new high-end Galaxy S, while Sprint (NYSE: S) announced its first 4G phone developed by HTC, and AT&T (NYSE: T) announced that the Dell phone will be available soon.  Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt had a keynote address at MCW. At the show, he said the company doubled the number of phones it was shipping over the past quarter to 60,000 handsets a day. Google could ship roughly 22 million phones this year by estimation. If it continues to double every quarter, it could hit 27 million.

“We share revenue on search, not on mobile applications,” a Google spokesperson said. “The same is true for non-Android devices that use Google as the default search engine.”

Verizon HTC Incredible Coming in by April?

The Verizon HTC Incredible was latest and perhaps the slickest Android handset to date.  According to reports, the phone will have a 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD 8250 Snapdragon ARM CPU and 512 MB of DRAM, just like the Nexus One. The CPU will be underclocked to 768 MHz (watch out for an Apple patent on that one). It should be more than enough speed to run most apps, while helping to providing longer talk time than the Nexus One. The phone also has a better camera than the Nexus One -- an 8-megapixel camera with a noticeably larger lens.  The camera makes it just slightly thicker than the Nexus One, measuring in at 117.5 x 58.5 x 11.9 mm.  It is rumored to come with a 6 GB of flash memory, a microSD expansion slot, and an FM tuner.  The battery is a 1300 mAh cell. Sources say that Verizon powered this monster handset would be available by April. No details of pricing or official details yet.

Motorola has improved the button layout on the front of the phone by adding dedicated keys for Back, Home, Menu, and Search. A touch navigation pad is located between the buttons and it can also be clicked. The touch pad has a nice textured coating and we had no issues navigating around. Dedicated camera, power, and volume keys are located on the sides of the device along with a 3.5 mm headset jack and micro USB port. Motorola has included Motoblur which is their custom flavor of Android. It offers additional features like social media integration and mobile backup. Newer versions of Android (2.1) now include multi account support and integrate easily with social networks like Facebook. Motorola will roll out some new features for Motoblur when they update to the Android 2.1 firmware. The CLIQ XT also sports "pinch-to-zoom" capabilities like some of the other premium smartphones on the market. Technically It supports multitouch. Of note is the redesigned user interface HTC Sense.  The design of the HTC Desire looks pretty good. It is neatly finished at a high level. It’s not for nothing that HTC places this new model on the scale as a high-end Android smartphone. The AMOLED multi-touch screen has extensive possibilities such as zooming in on certain parts. Additionally, various sensors and meters ensure that the screen display can be automatically rotated to landscape or portrait. The speed with which the HTC Desire smartphone executes certain tasks is very good.

Google Android Market Crosses the 30,000 apps Milestone

Android Market has made it way past 30,000 apps within a very short span of time. While Google doesn’t publicly show how many applications there are in Android Market, a Google representative confirmed that Android Market has crossed 30,000 applications. The application store for Android devices supposedly hit the 10,000 apps milestone in September 2009 according to third-party developer AndroLib, who later also claimed that number doubled in just over 3 months.  Google says the number grew from 16k to 30k apps in exactly three months.

The company declines to detail what percentage of apps in Android Market are paid versus free, but for what it’s worth, AndroLib says the ratio is about 39% paid vs. 61% free of charge. Apple crossed over 140,000 apps in the App Store in January 2010, so it’s safe to assume there should be about 5 times as many apps for the iPhone and iPod touch as there are for Android devices right about now. Research agency research2guidance recently released a report forecasting that the total app download market could grow to a whopping $15 billion by 2013.
