Google Nexus Two by Samsung Features Specs Details

nexustwo

Samsung revealed that it would be launching a new Android device at a November 8 event in New York City. Today Android and Me is reporting that this event is actually the launch of the Nexus Two, the successor to Google's HTC-built Nexus One, which was launched earlier this year.

Citing multiple sources (all anonymous) Android and Me reports that the Nexus Two will ship with Gingerbread (aka Android 2.3) and will launch in time for the holidays. Specs, pricing, carrier and release date remain to be seen but considering Samsung's impressive Galaxy S line-up, we've got pretty high hopes.

The Samsung “Nexus Two” phone will feature:

  • Stock Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • 1.2 GHz processor
  • 4 inch AMOLED display
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and HD video capture (don’t know about flash), front-facing camera
  • 512 MB RAM, 16 GB internal storage
  • Support for multiple carriers (radios are unknown)
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm headset jack,
  • Outer casing is a mix of metal and plastic materials

This rumor comes to light after reports that said Motorola would be building the Nexus Two. The company said earlier this year that one of its 2010 Android phones would be a direct-to-consumer phone for Google. This week, London-based newspaper City-AM cited an anonymous source in reporting that Motorola would ship the Nexus Two before the end of the year. However, this report also indicated that previous rumors about a Samsung-built Nexus Two were inaccurate. Whatever happens, we'll be at the Samsung event in NYC so we'll be sure to keep you posted on this one.

Nexus One from Google Coming to Sprint; Availability Date Announced Soon

Nexus One(TM) is planned for the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network with twice the network coverage of AT&T and ten times the network coverage of T-Mobile, both by square miles; Expands Sprint's Android(TM) portfolio

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Mar 17, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nexus One, the first wireless phone sold through Google(TM)'s web store, is planned for Sprint's 3G Mobile Broadband Network. Sprint (NYSE:S) will announce pricing and an exact availability date soon. Nexus One will benefit from Sprint's 3G network with twice the coverage of AT&T and 10 times the coverage of T-Mobile, both based on square miles.1

Sprint currently has America's largest voice calling area of any carrier reaching more than 307 million people in the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands with a Sprint phone and plan that includes roaming. PC World recently said no one has a more reliable network than Sprint in a 13 city 3G performance test.2 Customers can check the quality of network coverage with street level mapping at sprint.com/coverage.

"Nexus One is a powerful device that belongs on a powerful network. This is another step in our continued partnership of innovation with Google," said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president of product development. "Sprint customers already have the option of two amazing Android devices with Samsung Moment(TM) and HTC Hero(TM). It is a natural fit for us to add Nexus One to the list of choices available for Sprint customers who want the best value in wireless with the best in Android."

It will be available directly from Google at google.com/phone. The online experience of Google's web store is designed with a focus on simplicity allowing consumers to match a phone with the service plan that best meets their needs.

"While a pricing plan has not yet been determined for Nexus One, we are confident that it will be consistent with Sprint's commitment to deliver more value than our competitors and keep pricing simple," Adib said. "Right now, our Sprint Everything Data 450 plan with Any Mobile, Anytime(SM) gives customers unlimited calling with any mobile phone in America, unlimited text and unlimited Web for just $69.99 per month - the same price AT&T and Verizon charge for just unlimited talk. Nexus One Lite Making its way to India?

google-nexus-one3

Nexus One is currently the hottest device you can by at the moment. HTC is the hardware manufacturer, and surely the internals of the Nexus One were up to par with Google’s standards. The N1 is available in select countries at the moment, but rumor has it that the device will be coming to India soon, only slightly lite version hardware wise.

This is in no way confirmed, but the N1 is a premium device, and to make it cheaper means lowering some specifications. The core features of the device will stay the same; screen size, Snapdragon, software, etc. What is more probable to be shaved down is internal memory, camera megapixel count, and so on. It’s also rumored that the Indian version will be slightly slimmer.

Where some people may think it bad of Google to shave off some specifications of their device down, but that's a good idea, to offer both the Nexus One and the Nexus One (.5) in their online store, available to anyone, U.S. included, and not just India. Not everyone wants to drop $530 dollars on a phone, and not everyone wants to switch to America’s 4th largest carrier. What we are unsure of as of now is whether this Nexus One would be a completely new phone or just  a stripped down barebones version of the original with a few chips missing. We believe even the cheaper Nexus One will boast of the main features of the phone namely, the 3.7-inch screen and the uber fast Snapdragon processor. The things that might see a compromise would be the camera and other features like Internal memory. These are just speculations and we'd soon be informed how different this poor man's Nexus One turns out to be.

Google Nexus One Sales in UK by April

nexusone_1

Google’s Nexus One was slated to launch in the UK by April. It will be on sale through Google.com/phone only, as the company has previously announced. Tariffs have not been announced. Built by HTC, the Nexus One is Google’s attempt to assert the superiority of its mobile operating system Android, in the face of market dominance from Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s reinvigorated mobile software, Windows Phone.

Vodafone, had been keen for a launch in March, sources close to both companies have confirmed that April is when the company will have a realistic chance of being ready for the launch. The Nexus One is unusual because it is available online only direct from Google. Although sales had initially been reported as slow in comparison to the iPhone, the Nexus One has not benefited from the significant promotion that Apple has bought for its flagship product. Google issued an update to the phone, shortly after its American launch in January, which added the multitouch web browsing that has been so successful on Apple’s iPhone. Both Google and Vodafone would only say that they were committed to delivering the phone to the UK in the spring.

Google Nexus One Sells 80000 in First Month

nexus-sales

The iPhone and Motorola Droid both had marketing campaigns that likely rank as the most expensive for a consumer electronics device so far this millenium. Furthermore, those seeing the commercial knew exactly where to get the object being advertised and had few questions about how to obtain the product. On top of that, customers oblivious to the commercials still had a high chance of purchasing the device just by walking into the store and being told about it.

The Nexus One ad campaign was based entirely online using Google Ads and a brief feature on Google’s homepage. Customers had to purchase the device through the Google website and, since it wasn’t tied directly into a carrier, most customers were probably confused about how this affected their regular/existing contract or what this meant by signing a new contract. It was a new way of obtaining a phone and people aren’t comfortable with “new” because things that are new are often confusing – ESPECIALLY when you’re talking about technology and service contracts.

Much of Google’s goals were to break this pattern of purchasing mobile phones in the FIRST place. And based on only selling 80,000 units I think they’ve got a LONG way to go. And although the iPhone and Droid had huge traditional media campaigns, you would think that a featured spot on the Google homepage for DAYS along with millions of ad impressions across the interwebz would move more units in 1 month.

Especially because the Nexus One is Google’s first sponsored phone and many are saying its better than the iPhone.

Google Nexus One Update Enables Google Goggles, Multi-Touch, 3G Fixes

nexusoneupdate

Nexus One owners finally have something to be upbeat about – Google has released an over-the-air update enabling multitouch (finally), Google Goggles (again, finally), and some 3G fixes (triple thumbs-up).

According to Google, the update will include:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

  • Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com – access your favorite places from your phone or computer
  • Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history – makes it easy to search for places you’ve searched for before
  • Night mode in Google Maps Navigation – automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones

Apparently in order to access the update, you’ll need to wait until you “receive a message on your phone’s notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week.”

Nexus One Sales are strong but less compared with iPhone

108528_nexusiphone

The Google Nexus One is the hottest new Android phone, and a market analyst has come with a prediction that over 5 million of these devices will sell in 2010. That number is dwarfed by another analyst's predictions for Apple iPhone sales, though.

Doug Anmuth from Barclays Capital predicts that Google will sell between 5 and 6 million Nexus One units by the end of the year. That will bring in between $2.6 billion and $3.2 billion in revenue.

These figures include sales through T-Mobile USA, who is offering this smartphone now, and Verizon Wireless, who is going to pick it up in the spring.

Sales of the Nexus One should make Google a significant player in the smartphone market this year, but it's still likely to be well behind the top dog in this market, Apple.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates that U.S. iPhone sales in 2010 will be around 16 million, and global sales will reach 36 million. That's a significant increase over the 2009 figures, 11 million and 26 million, respectively.

Munster's prediction does not include the iPhone sales by Verizon, which unconfirmed reports say will start offering this smartphone this summer.

Nexus-One-Flurry-Chart-Week1

Google Nexus One sold an anemic 20,000 units in its first week of sales. When we first looked at the data our initial thoughts were that sales may have been hindered by the Nexus One’s availability on a single network at time of launch. However, when we saw that the myTouch 3G, also available exclusively on T-Mobile at time of launch, sold 60,000 units in its first week, we started to think again. The chart also compares the N1’s sales figures with those of the Motorola DROID, 250,000 in week one (with a rumored $80M advertising budget), and, unfairly, with the iPhone 3GS, 1.6 million in week one (the iPhone was available in many countries and many networks at time of launch). What does this mean for Android? To be completely honest, not very much. It was however a very disappointing launch for the first of many, many Android powered phones by HTC and Google this year, especially with Google pumping out one of biggest AdWords campaigns we’ve ever seen.

Flurry monitors the usage of more than 10,000 developer applications on iPhone and Android platforms. It tracks over 25 million end user sessions per month. From that, it was able to figure out the first week sales for the Nexus One as well as prior phone launches such as the myTouch 3G, Droid, and iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3GS sold more than a million units over the first three days of sales in June, 2009. The Droid, an Android phone built by Motorola and launched in November, sold 250,000 units in its first week, more than 12 times as much as the Nexus One.

The Nexus One may seem like a dud. It has gotten good reviews for features such as Google Voice and Google Maps. But Flurry notes that it hasn’t lived up to the early expectations, and distribution, pricing, and marketing have not been aggressive. Having real in-store representatives to let you touch and feel a phone — like the big carriers do — may turn out to be a competitive advantage. Consumers may not be used to going to a Web site to buy a phone; and they maybe stuck in the middle of a contract with a carrier, another disincentive for switching. While Verizon spent $100 million marketing the Droid, and has plenty of customers ready to upgrade, Google merely sells its device directly to consumers via its own web site. Google also launched after the holidays.

T-Mobile, the carrier partner for Nexus One, did not provide the same carrier co-marketing support as it did for the myTouch 3G launch. And Google has set its direct-to-consumer price for the Nexus One at over $500.

Google release Android 2.1 SDK | Nexus One OS

68060_Android_2.1_Droid_1

One of the key features of the Nexus One has nothing to do with its hardware. The latest and greatest Android phone also is the first device to come with the new Android 2.1 OS. And while other phones, like the Droid, are going to get it too for you can also download the Android 2.1 SDK.

As noted on the Android Developers Blog, the team is releasing it before most devices have it so that developers can play around with and build for the new features introduced in 2.1. Though Google calls 2.1 a “minor platform release” over Android 2.0, there are a number of new elements such as voice recognition, live wallpapers, a new launcher, more home screens, and some WebKit changes. Those who have ported it over to the Droid note that the new OS is also faster.

Google also notes that there is a new USB manager available through the SDK Manager that supports the Nexus One. This may or may not be related to the new services that it seems like Google wants to include with the device, such as a new docking station for backing up your data.

You can find the new SDK here.

Nexus One Hardware to Cost 174.15 $ by iSuppli Analysis

nexusone

The Nexus One, sold with the Google brand name but manufactured by HTC Corp., carries a Bill Of Materials (BOM) of $174.15, based on a preliminary estimate from iSuppli’s Teardown Analysis Team. This total comprises only hardware and component costs for the Nexus One itself and does not take into consideration other expenses such as manufacturing, software, box contents, accessories and royalties.

Google is selling unlocked versions of the Nexus One at an unsubsidized price of $529, or at $179 with a two-year service contract from T-Mobile.

“With the Nexus One, Google has taken the most advanced features seen in recent smart phone designs and wrapped them up into a single sleek design,” said Kevin Keller, senior analyst, competitive analysis, for iSuppli. “Items like the durable unibody construction, the blazingly fast Snapdragon baseband processor and the bright and sharp Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AM-OLED) display all have been seen in previous phones, but never before combined into a single design. This gives the Nexus One the most advanced features of any smart phone ever dissected by iSuppli’s Teardown Analysis Service—a remarkable feat given the product’s BOM is similar to comparable products introduced during the past year.”

Enable Nexus One tethering | Download | Install Help

NexusOneTethering

Nexus One has been hacked already to enable both wireless and wired (via usb) tethering option in Android 2.1. Folks over at the XDA forums have released some add-ons, which needs to be flashed over the top of the existing Android 2.1 firmware to get it to work.

This is not a full fledged ROM, but an add-ons pack which includes a custom kernel, Busybox, Nano 2.09, powertop, dropbear, wireless tethering option (Yay!), titanium backup and more. Follow the steps below to install all these add-ons to enable tethering on the Nexus One.

Note: Follow the step by step guide posted below on your own risk. Make sure you make a backup first using Nandroid. We are not to be held responsible if you end up bricking your beloved Google phone.

Step 1: First up, you will have to unlock the bootloader, and then root your Nexus One for full file system access on Android 2.1.

Step 2: Now download the Nexus One Addon 0.1 from the source link and flash it over the existing firmware. Don’t wipe!

Step 3: Now simply install wireless tethering, VPNC client, Adfree, N1 Torch to your liking. If you want to enable wired tethering, you’ll need to download an app for that from either Android Market, or directly from here.

With tethering now enabled, it wont be too long before hackers enable multitouch functionality on the Nexus One by either porting it over from Motorola Milestone ROM, or through the European version of Nexus One which is said to be having this functionality.

Vodafone answers about Nexus One Release

vodafone nexus one

With rumours rife about the when, whereabouts of the Nexus One to the UK, Vodafone has issued a FAQ page on the company's website to clear up a few of the issues.
The key points are that the phone is available now from the Nexus One site SIM-free and independently of Vodafone for users in the UK, US, Hong Kong and Singapore. However, the phone will be arriving subsidised on the Vodafone UK network from early spring 2010.
Taking that literally, 1 March would be the earliest spring date. However, a Vodafone spokeswoman has already stated that the Nexus One will be arriving in "a few short weeks", so someone somewhere is mistaken or they're being rather liberal with their definitions of time.
As far as pricing goes, all the company will say is that the Nexus One price plans will be "similar to those Vodafone offers for its wide range of smartphones" - quite possibly matching the iPhone in the way that O2 did with the Palm Pre.
The phone will be available subsidised or SIM-free and part of the Super SIM deals, but only purchased through the Google Nexus One website. Customer support will come both from Google and Vodafone.

here is the topic about Nexus one :

Q. Will Vodafone customers be able to get the recently announced Google offer in the UK? If so, when?
A. There will be more information soon about when Vodafone customers in the UK will able to get the Google superphone offer. We’re planning an early Spring launch.
Q. Why should I go for the Google offer on Vodafone?
A. As the smart home for smartphones, we have a wide range of great handsets and services as well as the ideal network for these smartphones.
The Vodafone UK network is specially designed for smartphones and therefore is the best network to use this kind of device. Many of our customers are small, medium and large businesses who demand a high quality network. We’ve built the best network in the UK and so all of our customers can take advantage of that quality and reliability.
Q. Why are you bringing the Google offer to customers?
A. Vodafone UK is the smart home of the smartphone - we want to ensure that our customers have a great choice of the best available smartphones and experiences on the UK’s best network.
Q. What is a superphone?
A. Google describe the Nexus One as belonging to the next evolution of handsets and use the term “superphone” for it.
Q. T-Mobile US will sell at €179 on a two year contract against an unsubsidised price of €529 – will a Vodafone contract be on at a similar handset price point?
A. Details around pricing will be announced as the offer is introduced in the UK.
Q. Will Vodafone have a specific Google tariff or is it likely to be the kind of tariff Vodafone offers for smartphones?
A. The price plan will be similar to those Vodafone offers for its wide range of smartphones
Q. Will the phone be available on prepay in the UK?
A. Customers will be able to purchase the Nexus One SIM-free and unlocked and take advantage of our Super SIM plans.
Q. When will the offering be available with a VF contract in the UK?
A. There will be more information soon about when Vodafone customers in the UK will able to get the Google superphone offer.
Q. Is it right that customers can order it unlocked and unsubsidised today via the Google web shop?
A. Yes. Customers in the US and three additional countries can purchase the Nexus One: UK, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Q. Can customers register interest or pre-order the Vodafone-related price plan version from today?
A. Pre-ordering is not possible yet but check the www.google.com/phone site for news and updates on a regular basis.
Q. Will you be selling in Vodafone stores or via Vodafone.co.uk?
A. The Google offer is a new way to purchase a mobile phone so will only be available online through Google’s web store (www.google.com/phone).

Q. How will customers be supported if they have queries about the phone or service – via Google or Vodafone?

A. Both Vodafone and Google will support customers. Customer queries regarding the phone or Google services will be supported by Google. Queries on tariffs, billing, Vodafone services, network queries etc will be supported by Vodafone.
Q. What services will the offer include?
A. All the currently available details are at www.google.com/phone
Q. When will I know when I can get the Google offer?
A. Keep visiting www.google.com/phone on a regular basis for news and updates.

Google Nexus One Facing 3G Connectivity Problems

nexusone_1

Google’s Android smartphone, the Nexus One, seems to have some problems with 3G reception.

There’s a long thread over at the Google support forums, where some of the new Nexus One owners are reporting 3G connectivity issues in the US.

It looks like the HTC-made smartphone gets a weak 3G signal from time to time, and even switches to EDGE, while other T-Mobile phones have good reception.

Nexus One users to report the problems as:

“I switched from a Moto Cliq, where I had 3-4 bars of 3G in my house constantly, to a Nexus One. I now either get 1 or no bars of 3G. I made sure that always use 2G was disabled, and I can’t seem to figure out what the problem is.”

“I upgraded from a Blackberry Pearl to the Nexus One. I cannot get any 3G service as of yet. Don’t know what the problem is. T-mobile and HTC support weren’t able to help.”

“I’m having this same problem. My G1 has 3G with full strength, but sitting right next to it my Nexus has 1 bar of 3G and keeps switching to Edge. If I let it sit for a while it may go up to 3 bars of signal strength but as soon as I start trying to use it the signal strength drops back down to one bar. I called T-mobile to make sure that I didn’t need to activate the phone or something to get 3G service. They said my account looked fine and that they couldn’t give me any more support since I had a Nexus One, that I had to call HTC. So I called HTC and they said that your 3G service is a T-mobile issue and they couldn’t help me. The fact that my G1 works perfectly sitting right next to the Nexus though makes me think it really is a problem with the phone.”

So it might be a problem related just to T-Mobile’s 3G (the carrier uses the not-so-common 1700MHz frequency). No one from the UK, Singapore or Hong Kong reported any issues with Nexus One’s 3G performance. Lets hope HTC fixes all these issues.

Google to sell 6 Million Nexus one units in 2010

Google_Phone_NYBZ172.standalone.prod_affiliate.81

Nexus One has officially launched, along with the far more interesting carrier-independent smartphone store through which it is being sold, what kind of sales can we expect ?

Barclays Capital analyst Doug Anmuth hazards a guess: Five to six million units sold in 2010, based on distribution through T-Mobile at launch and Verizon Wireless (VZ) by spring.

That’s quite a number, considering that Motorola’s (MOT) 2010 global smartphone shipments are expected to be somewhere around 13 million units. And, according to Anmuth, Nexus One sales should allow Google to book incremental revenue of $2.6 billion–$3.2 billion. Not bad for a first retail effort from a company that’s not exactly known for retailing.

The Gallery is the first native mobile product to make browsing, organizing, sharing
and editing media simple, in one seamlessly integrated application.
Because consumers store large amounts of media on their mobile devices, the Gallery is designed to scan quickly through thumbnails of media and loads the high-resolution versions on selection. This makes it easy and efficient for users to quickly browse their photos and videos. Using geolocation and tagging, users can sort their media into digital stacks by date, time and location, making it easier to find and organize photos and videos.
Users can also pull existing albums from their desktops or access Picasa web albums. A notable feature of the Gallery is the two-way sync with Picasa albums, allowing users to dynamically update and access their Picasa media on-the-go.
From within the Gallery application, users can also easily share their videos and images. In just one step, images, videos, or entire albums can be shared through email, MMS messaging, Picasa, or a Bluetooth connection. This multi-share capability is completely unique to the Gallery on the Nexus One smartphone.
In addition to working with the photo and video capabilities of the Nexus One smartphone, the Gallery also integrates with other Nexus One applications that leverage rich media.
Open Handset Alliance Details
By joining the Open Handset Alliance and contributing the Gallery application to the Android open source project, Cooliris demonstrates its commitment to supporting open web technologies.
As a member, Cooliris will join other major technology and mobile companies who have come together to accelerate innovation and offer consumers a richer, less expensive and more effective mobile experience via Android.
“Cooliris is committed to providing the most compelling and easy-to-use applications for consuming media across multiple devices, including mobile and desktop,” said Soujanya Bhumkar, co-founder and CEO, Cooliris. “We are honored to join together with Google, the Open Handset Alliance and the open source community in order to collaborate and move Android even further ahead in delivering the ultimate mobile consumer experience.”

Vodafone UK to Launch Nexus One in a Few Weeks

google nexus one

The arrival of the Vodafone Nexus One will mean that UK buyers will be able to pick up a cheaper handset (with agreement) rather than paying the $529 SIM-free, unlocked price.  It’s unclear whether a version of that unlocked handset will be made available in UK pounds and shipped from within the country as well; Vodafone are yet to confirm any pricing.  Sales will be through Google’s webstore; the search giant confirmed Vodafone as an upcoming carrier partner at their launch event for the Nexus One yesterday; the smartphone will also arrive on Verizon’s US network in CDMA form sometime in Spring 2010.

The touch-screen device, launched on Tuesday and produced in collaboration with Taiwan electronics group HTC, poses a direct challenge to Apple's top-selling iPhone.

"I can confirm that Vodafone is the first operator to partner with Google to offer the Nexus One in Europe, starting soon in the UK, in a few short weeks," a Vodafone spokeswoman told AFP.

"No detail on pricing and precise timing has yet been made, but that will come in a few weeks."

Customers will be able to purchase a subsidised Nexus One phone with a Vodafone contract. The device will also be available directly through the Google web store.

Google said earlier it had reached "strategic partnerships" with telecom firm Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe.

Vodafone added Wednesday that the group was in talks to sell the Nexus One in France, Germany and other European countries this year.

"We're in early discussions with Google to introduce the offer in France (through SFR) and in Germany and Spain, and more European countries are expected during 2010," the spokeswoman said.

"Our agreement with Google stretches beyond Europe -- all Vodafone's geographies -- and over time we will be working to provide offers in other Vodafone operating countries."

Separately, rival O2 told AFP that it was closely following developments over the Nexus One handset.

"We have been following Google's announcement with interest," said a spokeswoman for O2, which is the British division of Spanish telcoms group Telefonica.

"We welcome innovation in our industry and have already seen devices such as the Apple iPhone and Palm Pre have a huge effect on the way people use their mobile phones."

iFixit have proved they’re far braver than we are by taking a screwdriver or two to their brand new Google Nexus One.  In the latest of the company’s teardowns, the newest entrant to the HTC Android family Along the way there are a few discoveries, including confirmation that the WLAN chip is Broadcom’s BCM4329.  That’s WiFi 802.11n-capable, and in fact HTC confirmed to SlashGear earlier on today that the Nexus One not only has the hardware to connect to the faster wireless network standard but that it’s not – as we saw on the HD2 – blocked from doing so.

Unfortunately some overly-forceful treatment of the Nexus One’s EMI covers on the mainboard left iFixit’s unit less than reliable, which just goes to remind us that these are teardowns for entertainment value primarily rather than instructions for repair.
