Sony Ericsson Yari Review

Design

sonyyari

The Sony Ericsson Yari is a slider phone that sports a neat and simple design. It features a 2.4-inch screen with QVGA resolution, which has pretty good picture quality. There are two buttons right above that are used to call up the game menu or control in-game actions. So that you can play game horizontally. Below the display, there is an ample D-pad is sided by six controls – two soft keys at the top (left and right), Call and Shortcut keys at the left side, and End and Clear key on the right. The rounded button D-pad it self also assigned to various shortcuts on the homescreen like up direction is for music player, left and right were messaging and Bluetooth and down for contacts. Sliding the phone will open decent 12-key alphanumeric keypad. The keypad is flat and offering little tangible borders between the different rows or columns. And it is easy to press. Overall, the Sony Ericsson Yari is slim with 15.7mm thick and 115g, therefore it is pocket friendly.

Features

The gesture control gaming is the Yari selling point. This feature actually was get famous because of Nintendo Wii. However, it is first time we see feature on amobile phone . How does it work? Take the pre-loaded tennis game as an example. Firstly activate the game and set the device up on a table top for example, and stand in front of the phone, imagining you have a tennis racket in your hand. Than start waving your hand as you will see the display showing the tennis ball flying and the front facing camera will pick up your motions as you play the game. It is just like you paly with the Wii.

While for other entertainment, Yari equipped with the latest Walkman music player without being a dedicated Walkman device. It is quite familiar to other Walkman phone. However, the new added features is the music player background graphics has variety of visual styles – cassette, old record player, CD player etc. They do not deliver added functionality, but look pretty nice indeed. Audio is boosted by Mega Bass features, and it quality is pretty nice. The player is able to play most audio and video file formats. And of course the phone also has come with a Stereo FM radio with RDS support.

Sony-Ericsson-Yari-02-full-preview-03

The camera on the Yari is a 5.0 Megapixel device, with autofocus and an LED flash, as well as Geotagging. Features like face detection and image stabilisation are included. The camera interface has no changes since the SE W995, and it is easy to use as usual. The quality of the images that taken is pretty nice for a mid range phone. Video recording is also enabled on the camera, which allows to record in QVGA@30fps. The quality is not good as for picture capturing, though it got a video light which is a nice attempt.

The Sony Ericsson Yari has a GPS receiver. You will find both Google Maps and Wayfinder Navigator on board. The usual Location services set is pre-installed as well. Other applications such as Tracker make good use of the GPS receiver.

Conclusion

The Yari looks great but doesn't have stellar features or applications. The phone is fine and the battery is good, but this can be said for most phones we review. The web browser, games and navigation are mediocre features with limited purpose, and the music player would have been great if Sony Ericsson got past its insistence on using a proprietary port for connecting headphones. We have to admit that the Sony Ericsson Yari is just a ordinary mid range phone. However, the gesture control gaming make it really appealing. The phone is expected to be highly-desired phone by many teenagers.
