CES_2010

The Consumer Electronics Show -- the 500 pound. gorilla of tradeshows -- is kicking off in Las Vegas later this week. A number of companies will be using this event to unveil new smartphones. These announcements are still days away, but many of the details have leaked out already.

Motorola has an event planned for Wednesday where it could announce two new models running Google's Android OS.

One of these may be the Motorola Backflip, which will supposedly be AT&T's first phone with Google's operating system. The other is rumored to be the Motorola Droid Devour, Verizon's third Android model.

Sprint and LG's phone division have invited journalists to an event on Wednesday where Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, will be speaking. They are expected to announce the first Windows phone that can connect to WiMAX networks.

Palm's event is scheduled for Thursday. The highlight of this will almost certainly be an announcement that Verizon Wireless is launching the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus, enhanced versions of webOS-powered smartphones that debuted last year.

In addition, this company should be demoing new capabilities of the webOS, including tools to allow developers to create better games and other software.

Samsung is holding a press event on Friday. But unlike many of its competitors, it has managed to keep a lid on exactly what it is going to unveil at CES this year.

And a Special Appearance By...
Google has chosen to not announce the Nexus One at CES, instead holding its own event tomorrow. Nevertheless, this new high-end phone running the Android OS is expected to be in attendance at this tradeshow.

T-Mobile USA will be offering the Nexus One, but aside from this model, this carrier is expected to have a low profile in Las Vegas.
